"Succession Planting for a Long Season” – Fergus Garrett, Great Dixter
A very special one this! Fergus has held the position of Head Gardener for the internationally acclaimed Great Dixter Garden in East Sussex since 1993. He learnt from the great Christopher Lloyd to keep the gardens there constantly changing throughout the seasons and to be adventurous in trying out new plants and plant combinations. He has been awarded numerous awards over the years, including the highest accolade the RHS can give – the Victoria Medal of Honour.
Fergus believes in passing on his knowledge and expertise through the student- and volunteer-programmes at Great Dixter and via the many worldwide lectures he gives each year. He is a hands-on gardener and plantsman who has a keen interest in working practises.
In this talk, using the Long Border at Great Dixter as an example, Fergus will discuss how to plan and put into practice a long season border, using structural plants, pockets of bedding, underplanting and interplanting of bulbs, use of self-sowers, masking with climbers, and good maintenance.
The entry fee will include refreshments, and there will be plenty of time for questions.
It is a real coup to get Fergus up here to talk to us, we look forward to inviting our friends and neighbours to come along and welcome him with a full Institute.
Entry is £10 for members and £15 for non-members.
